Unit 4 Project
For the Unit 4 Project, students will be planning the layout of a tiny house on wheels. Students will need to find area, surface area, and volume of certain components of the house, as well as drawing the floorplan and different views to scale. The project is due by the end of the day on Thursday (if students were absent on Monday, the project will be due by class on the Tuesday after Memorial Day).

Properties!
We are focusing this week on the properties of addition and multiplication, and learning more specifically about the distributive property. We will see how these apply to expressions and how we will use these properties more as we continue our study into basic algebra.

Chapter 5 - Expressions
This week after taking the mid-year benchmark test, we will be starting Chapter 5. This chapter starts the unit on Expressions and Equations, and we will be looking at how to add and subtract expressions as well as how to factor linear expressions.

Unit 2 Project
Students will begin work on the Unit 2 Project this week, which uses integer and number skills to look at interesting facts about the ocean.

Early next week, we will also be taking the mid-year benchmark test; this is the same test they took at the beginning of the year, which helped us teachers see where the students were in the mathematical learning journey. Mrs. Cline and I want to see how much these 7th graders have learned since they began the year. We will take the same test again at the end of the year to see their progress throughout the entire year.

Finishing with Fractions
We've had about a week without math class! Students have been taking 4sight tests, and then we had a 2 hour delay which caused us to miss math class on Monday, 12/12. We are still on track to finish with material from Chapter 4 this week, review, and then have our Chapter 4 Test on Monday 12/19. We will not be starting any new material after the test before Winter Break.

This week we will be continuing our work with fractions. We will be having a quiz on Wednesday on the first part of the chapter. We will not have class on Thursday (our normal day of in the week) or Friday (Math Foresights).

Be Rational!
Chapter 4 is all about Rational Numbers - any number that can be written as a ratio between two integers. We will be learning how to compare and order rational numbers, add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers, and differentiate between rational and non-rational numbers.

We are finishing up work on Chapter 3 and have learned much in the past couple of weeks about integers. We will be having a test on all material from Chapter 3 on Monday, 11/21. Then we will be working on some holiday themed activities during class on Tuesday, 11/22.

Take a trip!
This week in 7th grade math, we planned a trip with groups. Each group decided on a place to visit and then looked up flights, rental cars, and restaurants. They then calculated costs using tax and tip, and also calculated how many gallons of gas our rental cars would use.

Tips, Tax, and Discounts!
Many of the 7th graders are excited about our topics this week because it has to do with shopping! We are learning how to find the amount of tax or tip, and how to find the final price after a discount.

Chapter 1 - Ratios and Proportional Reasoning
Chapter 1 is all about Ratios and Proportional Reasoning. We will build on the foundation of fractions and ratios that the students already know about and extend our knowledge to include unit rates, rate of change, and graphing proportional relationships.

We passed out books in class today, as well as a syllabus to each student. The students will be taking home the syllabus tonight to get it signed by a parent or guardian. We are all looking forward to a wonderful year of math!
