This week in math class, we will be completing the end-of-year Star Test. Once students complete the Star Test, they will begin the Middle School Math Placement Test. All students who have the potential to be placed into a middle school math class next year will be taking the placement test to help teachers place each student into the math class that will ensure the greatest student success.

May 22, 2017

This week, we only have math class on Tuesday and Wednesday because of 4th grade field trips and picnics. During the two days that we have math class, students will be taking the end-of-year math benchmark. Next week we will start a new project.

This week in math class, we are finishing up the material from the book. We will be reviewing for the Chapter Test on the material from chapters 13 and 14, which includes area & perimeter, lines, rays, angles, triangles, and quadrilaterals.

This week in math, we will be identifying, naming, and drawing lines, line segments, rays, and angles. We will also learn how to draw and measure angles with protractors (or protraTURTLES as the kids like to call them).

This week we will continue with our Pentominoes Project. So far, the students have successfully found all 12 pentomino shapes and have successfully used all 12 pentominoes to create rectangles of various sizes. Next, we will find the area and perimeter of those rectangles, as well as create our own shapes using the pentominoes.

To help practice area and perimeter, we will be creating the 12 different pentominoes shapes and then using those pentominoes to create our own shapes. We will then measure area and perimeter of both the pentominoes and the shapes that are created using pentominoes.

We are starting this project in class on Monday (4/24) and working on it only in class for a few classes over the next two weeks (the time will be more spread out due to PSSA testing). All work will be done in class.

We are starting Chapter 13 on area and perimeter this week. It is a short chapter and since the students are already pretty confident with area and perimeter, we will be spending most of the time on this chapter doing a project starting next Monday, 5/1; a description of the project is below. We will not have a Chapter Test just on this chapter, but will instead have a combined Chapter Test at the end of Chapter 14.

This week we are continuing our chapters on measurement. We have been using everyday objects in our classroom and measure their length, capacity, and weight. We will also be measure volume in the next couple of days. We are using US customary units as well as metric units, and converting between the two.

This week we will be starting our unit on measurements. We will be looking at customary US measurements as well as metric measurements; learning the typical measurements for length, capacity, weight, and time; and we will be learning how to convert between units using Dimensional Analysis.

This week we will be working on a decimals project in class, using sample products you might find at a supermarket. We will be adding, subtracting, and estimating prices using the given information.

We will also be celebrating Pi Day, and watching a few videos from our favorite mathematical YouTuber, ViHart.

This week, Mrs. Cline and I are teaming up to have Friday Feature all week long! Since we didn't want to start new material before break, we will be sharing interesting topics with the students. We will be learning a little trigonometry, some probability, information about infinities, how to use scientific notation, and more!

This week we are finishing our section on Decimals and Fractions. We will review all material in class on Wednesday and have a Chapter 10 Test on Thursday. We will then practice next week with a project about decimals and fractions.

This week we only meet as a math class a few times. We will be using our time together this week to practice our fraction skills by completing the Building a Bakery project. This project uses fraction skills to double and triple recipes, as well look at what fraction of goods was sold.

This week in 4th Grade Advanced Math, we are finishing up learning about operations with fractions. We've learned how to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers, and we've also learned how to multiply fractions with whole numbers.

This week we are starting a chapter that is all about doing operations with fractions. We will be adding and subtracting like and unlike fractions, as well as learning how to multiply fractions.

This short week, we started with the Chapter 8 Test. We will then be practicing more with simplifying fractions in preparation for working more with fractions in Chapter 9.

As we finish up the material from Chapter 8, we have remembered much about fractions and learned a lot about fractions as well. We have learned about equivalent fractions, and we have learned how to take a fraction and make it into simplest form.

Chapter 8, which we started today, focuses on the basics of fractions. We want to make sure that we know what fractions are and the vocabulary that goes along with fractions.

This week we will be finishing with Chapter 7 material and will have a test on Monday, 12/19. We have been enjoying stretching our brain power to find the patterns in the numbers or shapes that we see, as well as creating our own patterns for our classmates to figure out!

We are working on a Movie Marathon Project to reinforce the long division skills that we have been learning. We will be working on this project until we leave for Thanksgiving Break.

This week, we are finishing the material from Chapter 4 and 5. We are using multiplication skills to solve math problems and word problems. We will have our Chapters 4&5 Test on Thursday 11/03.

This week, we are learning more about the properties of multiplication, including the Distributive Property of Multiplication. We will be using our multiplication skills for our Resort Report project, where we will be looking at all of the different costs to start a hotel or resort. We will see how much it will cost us to open the hotel as well as seeing how much time it will take us to start making a profit!

This week, we are learning about tips and tricks for multiplication. Some of these tricks are especially helpful for when we have to use mental math.

Do you know how to quickly figure out whether something is a multiple of 3 or 9? Add up the digits of the number; if the sum is divisible by 3 or 9, then the digit is divisible by 3 or 9.

For our Friday Feature on 10/7, we watched videos about Hexaflexagons and created some for ourselves. This Monday, 10/10 we researched the history and key people in the flexagon story, as well as tried to figure out what other types of flexagons might have been created.

This week we are beginning material in Chapter 3, where we will talk about properties of multiplication and division. We will be making sure that we have a solid base with our multiples and factors so that we can extend that knowledge into our class this year and our future math classes.

This week, we are working on a project called The Great Zoo Review. We are using data from a fictitious zoo to figure out how much it would cost to go to the zoo with our families, how much it costs to have a meal there, how much food the animals eat, and much more! We will be working on the project Monday through Wednesday of this week, to help us review addition and subtraction rules.

This week's Friday Feature was presented by our own classmate, Mateo. He brought iPads for the other classmates to use and showed us how to use Algebra skills to get the dragon alone with the app Dragon Box 2. All of the students loved learning with the iPads and the app, and Mateo was a great teacher. Thanks Mateo!

This week in math class, we will be learning about addition properties and subtraction rules. We will be extending these properties and rules into large numbers, as well as using them to help us solve Word Problems.

Every Friday, we will be learning about an interesting mathematical topic. This Friday, we watched a video that showed us different reasons that 0.999... = 1 . All of the students were very interested in this topics and came back on Monday ready to discuss their thoughts from the weekend!

Today we started a project where we are Place Value Detectives, where our motto is "Be Prepared For Anything"! We will be using this project to practice place value and rounding, as well as using our problem solving skills to solve a few mysteries.
